MAKING CHRISTMAS CARDS
We held an event each in Namaka and Lautoka this month. We made Christmas cards and just enjoyed chatting with the students. We all had a great time talking about what Christmas means to each student. We also talked about the different Christmas rituals that the world uses in order to celebrate the festive season.
In Fiji, the Christmas holidays are more about having the family (nuclear and extended) all together after a 11-month separation. Families usually leave their hometowns, villages and parents home for work, school or for greener pastures if I may say.
The 11 months’ separation comes with the commitment to work and tertiary schools are mostly located in the urban areas. So usually at the festive season these members make arrangements to travel home to meet family.
In addition, as part of the contemporary festive season, families send Christmas cards to family members who will not be able to make it for the family gatherings in the village. These families maybe in other countries or maybe bedridden due to illness.
Hence for the final event for motivating the students and keeping to the tradition we decided to make Christmas cards.
We all just want to wish you and your family a merry Christmas and happy holidays!!
